Health Care: On to the Senate ©iStockphoto.com/ sjlocke On Saturday, the House passed legislation that, in our analysis, would provide access to affordable, comprehensive health care for the majority of people in this country and improve health care for Native Americans. Maintain the momentum by asking the Senate to pass legislation that also meets these criteria. Native Americans: White House Hosts Nation-to-Nation Conference Sec. of Interior Ken Salazar and Native leaders at the summit. Last week, President Obama invited representatives from each of the more than 550 federally recognized tribes to the White House to discuss how all sides can move beyond our troubled past and toward a more just future together. If President Obama wants to understand the problem of U.S. policy in Afghanistan, he might do well to turn to a fairy tale. I suggest that he take his top civilian and military advisors to the Family Theater at the White House to watch Walt Disney's 1940 film Fantasia. It tells the story of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." It's not just for kids anymore. Joe Volk Global Warming: Next Steps in Congress Last week, a key Senate committee approved legislation to reduce greenhouse gas pollution and create green jobs. Although far from perfect, the legislation would protect key Clean Air Act provisions that would require dirty coal-fired power plants to meet minimum modern technology standards for global warming pollution. You can help protect this provision by urging your senators to sign a letter to the Senate leadership organized by Senator Robert Menendez (NJ). Preventing War: Update on the Emergency Crises Fund FCNL continues to lead a lobbying effort for the inclusion of a $100 million Emergency Crises Fund in the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations bill. This fund would help the State Department and USAID respond quickly to unforeseen crises. The latest Prevent War email list message has an update--read it on our website. New Era, New Openings: FCNL Hosts Annual Meeting This Week Participants at FCNL's 2008 Annual Meeting. From Thursday through Sunday, nearly 200 Quakers will meet in Washington to discuss the opportunities and challenges for FCNL's lobbying work in this era. Keynote speakers at the event include Joshua DuBois, head of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, and Sayyid M. Syeed, National Director of the Office for Interfaith and Community Alliances at the Islamic Society of North America. We'll update you on meeting highlights in next week's e-newsletter.
